Questions

What is the role of architecture in relation to other social and human sciences?

Can the architectural design be made on the basis of the needs and the psychology of the user who is experiencing the architectures and from this study to emerge the building?

How easy is to undo the stigma of the vulnerable social groups and places?

Expectations

The following operation is located on the island of Agios Georgios of Salamis, also known as the `island of the wicked`. This fact is justified by the historical palms of this island as it has been stigmatized from the oldest uses, where it was a hospice for cholera cases and later an annex of the public psychiatric hospital of Attica.

Considering this site as a white canvas, an attempt was made to redefine the identity of the island through its reuse and emergence.

The aim of this diploma thesis is to design a therapeutic unit against addiction that will be based on an attractive environment that will creatively employ the hosts. A basic synthesis factor is the avoidance of institutionalization of the building in order to accommodate the guests. The social reintegration of users is also the key target of this unit.

The creation of a micro-society will help the progressive socialization of individuals through their interpersonal relationships and responsibilities. The therapeutic community will include activities and uses (museums, recreation, education, cultures, workshops, theater, sports) that will constantly concern the users and bring them into contact with the social fabric through the events that will take place and invite Society within this therapeutic community.
